Optic-Flow-Based Scene Reconstruction for UAV Navigation

Vision-based Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) guidance systems are of interest because they can be passive, low-cost, light-weight and low-power while still providing rich information about the environment. Optic flow can be used as an estimation of the motion field from a sequence of images taken flying through a scene, hence providing depth information. The computation of optic flow is simplified by the use of specially designed mirror profiles that give all points the same radial distance from the axis of flight the same optic flow value. Scene reconstruction is achieved by exploiting the known geometry of the mirror to produce a radial distance map of the world.
